The story

From Gaeta to Würzburg: pizza meets salami

In 997 the word “pizza” first appears in Gaeta. Around 1858 Emmanuele Rocco describes the street bakers' pizzas in Naples. In 1919, according to John Mariani, the first advertisement for pepperoni, the spicy salami of Italian immigrants, appears in New York. In 1952 Germany's first pizzeria opens in Würzburg; when salami first went onto pizza is not documented.
