The story
Bergamo 1961: how stracciatella was born
In 1946 the Tuscan Enrico Panattoni comes to Bergamo and takes over the gelateria “La Marianna”. In 1961 he trickles liquid chocolate into white ice cream there; while stirring it breaks into fine shreds. According to tradition, the name comes from the Roman egg soup “stracciatella”, whose egg sets in shreds just the same. Thus one of Italy's best-known flavours is born.
